Condemnation

A church congregation was stuck with a building in the crosshairs of the proposed new Gordie Howe International Bridge project in Detroit. Rather than choosing to continue to renovate the likely doomed building, they decided to move the congregation to a new location. Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) offered little over $100,000 to the congregation 5 years after they moved. Next, their condemnation attorney withdrew from the case.

Fortunately, they called DK-Law.  We countered with a competing appraisal.  MDOT decided to hire another appraiser who came back at $40,000 more which MDOT had to pay.  Not satisfied with this, we continued to advocate zealously for the church in depositions, case evaluation and motions.  Finally, MDOT capitulated and agreed to pay the church more than $300,000 plus attorneys’ fees and interest.
